What’s Surrogacy?

Gestational surrogacy is the process whereby a woman – the gestational surrogate – consents for an embryo transfer process, otherwise known as an IVF Procedure. During this technique, an embryo (or plural embryos) deriving from the couple obtaining the surrogacy service is implanted in the surrogate. If and when the procedure is successful, the surrogate becomes impregnated with the child of the couple (the designed parents). The amount of participation with the surrogate thereafter is completely up to the intended parents – typically, the couple is involved with the initial IVF treatments, and being present at the moment of labor and birth of their child. They then assume responsibility for the child post-delivery and make the permanent move to legal parenthood.

What’s IVF?

IVF is a process women choose opt for when they are having difficulties with infertility. The traditional IVF involves the removal of the human oocytes from the ovaries and the fertilization process, achieved by “letting” motile spermatozoa to fertilize the oocytes into a special culture medium. Which means that once embryos are produced, they are moved in to the uterine cavity through a process called Embryo Transfer. IVF is utilized to mimic the biological processes, in vivo.

IVF is utilized for women who’ve blocked or broken fallopian tubes, thus preventing the egg and sperm from meeting naturally. IVF also may help you and your partner if your infertility is unexplained and/or the male partner has a low sperm count. Other factors like mature age endometriosis, immunology, weight problems and psychology may lead a couple to infertility. IVF can be the treatment for you if these factors come into play during this stressful time in your lives.

IVF Timeline

Throughout a woman’s normal menstrual cycle, LH and FSH will be the hormones that the body uses to activate development and maturation of a single oocyte. In order to optimize your pregnancy rates during IVF, it is important to have more thatn one tmature oocyte available for fertilization, embryo development and transfer into the uterus. The ovaries are therefore activated using higher amounts of the stimulating hormone that naturally exist in your body. This is achieved using Gonadotrophin injections. Various stimulation regimes are present at this time, and the physician chooses the one suitable to your biological system, to be able to achieve a good number of high quality oocytes. Close monitoring of the follicles (the sacs which contain the growing oocytes in the ovaries) is required and is achieved with repeated ultra-sound to be able to determine their size and their quantities. At the appropriate timing, an additional amount of hormones will be administered, aiding with the ultimate maturation of the oocytes. Predicated by all the available opinions and laboratory conclusions, the most suitable time for the restoration will be determined.

This is the actual procedure where the doctor collects the oocytes of the female body, a procedure demanding anesthesia. A small needle enters the top part of the vagina, through the instruction of the ultrasound, into the ovary’s follicles. The liquid that is aspirated will then be studied in the lab, where the oocytes will be identified and moved into culture media in an incubator at 37oC to continue the maturation process for a few more hours.

In this stage, your partner must give his test of sperm on the day of the oocyte restoration which will be preserved until needed). His sperm will be carefully made ready with a special technique and the healthy spermatozoa separately. There are around 100,000 motile spermatozoa added per oocyte, with 4-6 hours after oocyte restoration. This is in order for the fertilization to occur within the next 12-18 hours in the incubator. The insemination process will lead to the fertilization of the oocytes, and ensuing embryos are transferred to different culture media to be observed closely over the next 48 hours.

Top quality embryos are chosen and are moved through the neck of the womb using a small catheter on the basis of their rate of growth and morphology. The amount of embryos that’ll be transferred is decided in line with the age and health background of the potential mother; alongside the number and quality of the embryos that have been released during each remedy cycle. For each couple, there’s a possibility of experiencing more than one child. Embryo transfer is a painless technique, much like having a cervical smear, and fortunately takes just a few minutes. Once the process has been completed, we highly recommend a short resting period in the recovery room. The day after, oocyte retrieval progesterone and other supplements will be given to ensure that the lining of the uterus receives sufficient stimulation and sustains the implantation of the embryos. Quantitative pregnancy tests with blood also needs to be svheduled 12-14 days after embryo transfer.
