What’s Surrogacy?

Gestational surrogacy is the procedure whereby a woman – the gestational surrogate – consents to an embryo transfer process, otherwise called an IVF Procedure. During this treatment, an embryo (or plural embryos) deriving from the couple acquiring the surrogacy service is implanted in the surrogate. If the procedure is successful, the surrogate becomes impregnated with the child of the couple (the planned parents). The level of participation with the surrogate thereafter is absolutely up to the intended parents – typically, the couple is involved with the initial IVF treatments, and being present at the point of delivery of their child. They then take responsibility for the child post-delivery and make the permanent changeover to legal parenthood.

What’s IVF?

IVF is a process women choose opt for when they are having difficulties with infertility. The conventional IVF involves the removal of the human oocytes from the ovaries and the fertilization process, accomplished by “letting” motile spermatozoa to fertilize the oocytes into a special culture medium. This means that once embryos are produced, they are transferred in to the uterine cavity through an activity called Embryo Transfer. IVF is used to imitate the biological functions, in vivo.

IVF can be used for women who have blocked or broken fallopian tubes, thus stopping the egg and sperm from meeting naturally. IVF may also help you and your spouse if your infertility is unexplained and/or the male spouse has a minimal sperm count. Other factors like mature age endometriosis, immunology, obesity and psychology may lead a couple to infertility. IVF can be the option for you if these factors come into play during this stressful time in your lives.

IVF Timeline

During a woman’s normal menstrual cycle, LH and FSH will be the hormones that your body uses to induce development and maturation of a single oocyte. In order to optimize your pregnancy rates during IVF, it is important to severa tmature oocyte for fertilization, embryo development and transfer into the uterus. The ovaries are therefore stimulated using higher levels of the stimulating hormone that naturally exist in your body. This is achieved using Gonadotrophin injections. Numerous stimulation regimes are present at the moment, and the physician chooses the one best suited to your biological system, in order to achieve a good number of high quality oocytes. Close monitoring of the follicles (the sacs which contain the growing oocytes in the ovaries) is necessary and it is achieved with frequent ultra-sound in order to find out their size and their numbers . At the correct timing, an additional amount of hormones will be given, aiding with the ultimate maturation of the oocytes. Based on all the available feedback and laboratory conclusions, the best time for the restoration will be decided.

This is the procedure where the doctor gathers the oocytes of the female body, a procedure needing anesthesia. A little needle enters the upper portion of the vagina, through the assistance of the ultrasound, into the ovary’s follicles. The liquid that is aspirated will be studied in the lab, where the oocytes will be determined and transferred into culture media inside an incubator at 37oC to continue the maturation process for a few more hours.

In this step, your partner will have to give his test of sperm on the day of the oocyte restoration which will be maintained until needed). His sperm will be carefully made ready with a special treatment and the healthy spermatozoa separately. There are approximately 100,000 motile spermatozoa added per oocyte, with 4-6 hours after oocyte restoration. This is in order for the fertilization to occur within the following 12-18 hours in the incubator. The insemination process will lead to the fertilization of the oocytes, and resulting embryos are transferred to different culture media to be viewed closely over the next 48 hours.

The best quality embryos are chosen and are transferred through the neck of the womb using a little catheter on the basis of their rate of development and morphology. The number of embryos which will be transferred is set in line with the age and medical history of the potential mother; alongside the number and quality of the embryos that have been released during each remedy cycle. For each couple, there’s a possibility of having several child. Embryo transfer is a painless treatment, much like having a cervical smear, and fortunately takes only a few minutes. Once the process has been completed, we highly recommend a brief resting period in the recovery room. The day after, oocyte retrieval progesterone and other supplements will be prescribed to ensure that the lining of the uterus receives sufficient stimulation and sustains the implantation of the embryos. Quantitative pregnancy tests with blood must also be svheduled 12-14 days after embryo transfer.
