What’s Surrogacy?

Gestational surrogacy is the procedure whereby a woman – the gestational surrogate – consents to an embryo transfer process, otherwise called an IVF Procedure. In this method, an embryo (or plural embryos) deriving from the couple obtaining the surrogacy service is implanted in the surrogate. If and when the procedure is successful, the surrogate becomes impregnated with the child of the couple (the designed parents). The amount of involvement with the surrogate thereafter is completely up to the intended parents – typically, the couple is associated with the initial IVF treatments, as well as being present at the moment of birth of their child. They then take responsibility for the child post-delivery and make the long term change to legal parenthood.

What’s IVF?

IVF is an option women choose to undergo when they are having problems with infertility. The traditional IVF involves the removal of the human oocytes from the ovaries and the fertilization process, achieved by “letting” motile spermatozoa to fertilize the oocytes into a particular culture medium. This means that once embryos are made, they are moved in to the uterine cavity through an activity called Embryo Transfer. IVF is employed to mimic the biological processes, in vivo.

IVF is utilized for women who have blocked or broken fallopian tubes, thus stopping the egg and sperm from meeting naturally. IVF also may help you as well as your spouse if your infertility is unexplained and/or the male spouse has a low sperm count. Other factors like mature age endometriosis, immunology, being overweight and mindset may lead a couple to infertility. IVF could be the treatment for you if these factors enter into play during this stressful time in your lives.

IVF Timeline

During a woman’s normal menstrual period, LH and FSH are the hormones that the body uses to stimulate development and maturation of a single oocyte. In order to optimize your pregnancy rates during IVF, it is important to severa tmature oocyte for fertilization, embryo development and transfer into the uterus. The ovaries are therefore activated using higher levels of the stimulating hormone that normally exist in your body. This is achieved using Gonadotrophin injections. Many different stimulation regimes exist at the moment, and the physician chooses the main one suitable to your biological system, in order to achieve a good number of high quality oocytes. Close monitoring of the follicles (the sacs that contain the growing oocytes in the ovaries) is necessary and is achieved with recurrent ultra-sound in order to ascertain their size and their quantities. At the appropriate timing, an additional amount of hormones will be administered, aiding with the ultimate maturation of the oocytes. Predicated by all the available feedback and laboratory results, the most suitable time for the restoration will be established.

This is the actual procedure where the doctor collects the oocytes of the womain’s body, a procedure needing anesthesia. A small needle enters the top portion of the vagina, through the guidance of the ultrasound, into the ovary’s follicles. The fluid that is aspirated will be studied in the laboratory, where the oocytes will be determined and moved into culture media in an incubator at 37oC to continue the maturation process for several more hours.

In this stage, your partner will have to give his test of sperm on the day of the oocyte restoration which will be conserved until needed). His sperm will be carefully made ready with a particular method and the healthy spermatozoa separately. There are around 100,000 motile spermatozoa added per oocyte, with 4-6 hours after oocyte restoration. This is for the fertilization to occur within the following 12-18 hours in the incubator. The insemination process will lead to the fertilization of the oocytes, and resulting embryos are transferred to different culture media to be viewed closely over the next 48 hours.

The best quality embryos are chosen and are moved through the womb using a little catheter on the basis of their rate of development and morphology. The number of embryos that will be transferred is set according to the age and health background of the potential mother; alongside the quantity and quality of the embryos which have now been released during each remedy cycle. For each couple, there’s a possibility of experiencing several child. Embryo transfer is a painless method, much like having a cervical smear, and fortunately takes just a few minutes. After the process has been completed, we highly recommend a brief resting period in the recovery room. The day after, oocyte retrieval progesterone and other supplements will be given to ensure that the lining of the uterus receives sufficient stimulation and sustains the implantation of the embryos. Quantitative pregnancy tests with blood also needs to be done 12-14 days after embryo transfer.
